Coming down from Coniston Old Man

This painting is based on a photograph taken from the path coming down from Coniston Old Man. Due to some generous babysitting from grandparents, Lucy and I took ourselves off for the afternoon and climbed the Old Man using Wainwright’s advice and avoiding the crowds.

I’ve been experimenting with painting with a palette knife recently, and so in addition to the painting above, I painted another version of the same image in a more impressionist style. Not sure it entirely works, perhaps because the composition is a bit too varied and complex.
